Certificates of notification of appointment as cadet, dated Dec. 3, 1817; copy of West Point certificate given to Latrobe on his resignation from U.S. Military Academy, dated Nov. 21, 1821; certificate of appointment as "a cadet in the service of the United States" dated Sept. 28, 1843, signed J.C. Calhoun; 4 pages of notes titled "Latrobe's append to the reunion 1887"; xerox copy of commonplace book kept by Latrobe while a cadet; 14 letters of correspondence, 1825, between Latrobe and cadets J.S. Thompson (who later changed his name to Henry S.J. Linden) and S.H. Ridgely, members of the committee on Kosciuszko's monument; note and letter, 5 October 1886, from Latrobe to Charles Braden, USMA 1864, offering the above correspondence to West Point; pamphlet, 1874, by Latrobe entitled "West Point memoranda", cover inscribed "General Cullum with compliments of the author".

John H. B. Latrobe was an author, lawyer, artist and inventor. He was born in Philadelphia on May 4, 1803, and was educated in Washington and Baltimore. He attended West Point, moved to New Jersey and was involved with the expansion of the railroads, specifically the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. He became a central figure in the movement to colonize Liberia with freed slaves from the United States.
